Tristan Engelschmidt, you have now played two J100 in Malaysia. Tell us about the differences with the conditions playing in Malaysia compared to in Europe with?
– First of all thanks to the EuroElite team for making it possible for me to play these ITF tournaments. I have now played two different J100’s in Malaysia and it’s been a great experience so far. The conditions in Malaysia are much different from the weather we have in Scandinavia. The humidity and heat here is incredible. Water and electrolytes are essential to prevent cramps and heat stroke. Almost everyday you see people loosing matches or forced to retire due to the heat. Therefore it’s very important to play wise and not make silly mistakes making you stay out in the heat longer.
This last week you won one round in singles and reached semifinal in doubles – how satisified are you with your game this week?
– I am very happy about how I am playing at the moment. I feel like I am playing better everyday. This tournament I lost a long and close match in singles which was determined by margins. My opponent was a bit better than me in tight moments playing solid and making me work for the points. However I of course wanted to win but I still felt like I learned a lot from this match. In doubles I played how I wanted and took out the second seeds on the way to the semifinal. Unfortunately we lost in the semifinal in a close match to the guys that took the title.
You teamed up with the Japanese guy Taisei Hata in doubles – how come you guys played together?
– I teamed up with Taisei Hata because I figured we could be a good team. We had trained a few times together and we saw it as a great opportunity to go far in the tournament.
Whats next up for you after this week?
– Next tournament is Andong J100 in South Korea. This next tournament is gonna be another great opportunity to gather new experiences and hopefully learn something valuable from it.
